The Apache Tears legend is based upon an actual confrontation between Pinal Apaches and the U.S. Cavalry in the 1870s. Avenging raids on local settlements, members of the U.S. Cavalry and a host of volunteers launched a surprise attack on the Apaches on what is now known as Apache Leap. Some 50 or so Apaches were killed in the first round of shots and the remaining 25 or so rode their horses or jumped over the cliff to their deaths rather than be captured or killed by the U.S. Cavalry. The Apache women gathered near the base of the mountain and wept for their lost brothers, husbands and sons and their tears fell into the bleached sands and hardened upon hitting the ground. When polished or held up to the light, these Apache Tear obsidian nodules are quite transparent and gemmy. True Apache tear obsidian nodules are those collected near Superior, AZ.
